Heat Pump Installation

Heat Pump Installation

Cold-climate heat pumps that actually work in Indiana winters. Dual-fuel options with your existing furnace as backup, or full all-electric Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat. Manual J sized, $2,000 federal credit eligible.

Heat Pumps in Indiana — The Honest Story

A 2010-era heat pump struggles below 25°F. A modern cold-climate inverter heat pump (Carrier Infinity Greenspeed, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Trane XV20i) keeps full heating capacity down to 5°F and continues to produce useful heat at −13°F. Indiana winters are no longer a deal-breaker — if you spec the right unit.

Dual-Fuel (Hybrid)

Heat pump above ~25°F, gas furnace below. Best of both worlds. Lower install cost since you keep the existing furnace.

All-Electric Cold-Climate

Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat or equivalent. No gas backup. Lowest carbon footprint, highest upfront, biggest rebates.

Inverter / Variable

Modulates output continuously instead of single-speed cycling. Quieter, better humidity control, longer equipment life.

Heat Pump FAQ

Do heat pumps actually work in Indiana winters?

Cold-climate inverter models (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Carrier Infinity Greenspeed, Trane XV20i) hold rated heating capacity down to about 5°F and continue to produce 70-80% capacity at −13°F. For the 4-6 days a year that's colder than that, a dual-fuel setup uses your gas furnace as backup.

What's the COP at 0°F?

For top cold-climate units, COP at 5°F is around 2.0-2.4. At 0°F it drops to 1.7-2.1. Still way more efficient than electric resistance heat strips (COP = 1.0), and competitive with $0.85/therm natural gas at Duke electric rates.

Will it raise my electric bill?

Yes — you're moving from gas to electric. But your gas bill drops or disappears. Net annual cost is typically within $200 of staying on gas, and you've removed combustion safety risk and gained AC at the same time.

How big a tax credit am I actually getting?

Federal 25C = 30% of equipment+install cost up to a $2,000 cap on heat pumps. So if your install is $13,000, you get the full $2,000. Add Duke rebate + any HEEHRA income-qualified rebate on top.

Can I keep my existing ductwork?

Usually yes, but heat pumps move more air than furnaces. We check static pressure and may recommend a return-air drop or one new supply run to keep the system happy.

How long does the install take?

Dual-fuel with existing ductwork: one day. Full system change-out with electrical work: 2-3 days.
