Indiana HVAC Licensing — What You Should Know
Indiana does not require a statewide HVAC contractor license (unlike plumbers and electricians, who are state-licensed). What is required:
- EPA Section 608 — federal, required for all refrigerant handling
- Mechanical permits — required for new HVAC installs and full system replacements in most Indiana jurisdictions
- Business registration — required to operate legally as an LLC in Indiana
- General liability insurance — not legally required but strongly recommended for consumer protection
When evaluating any HVAC contractor, ask to see EPA 608 certification and proof of insurance. Both should be readily available.
We Pull Every Required Permit
When work requires a permit (full system replacements, gas line modifications, ductwork changes), we pull it from the relevant Building Department — Boone County Area Plan Commission for unincorporated areas, or the municipal Building Department for incorporated towns.
Why this matters for you:
- Manufacturer warranty on new equipment requires permitted installation in most jurisdictions
- Unpermitted work can create complications at resale (buyer's inspector will check)
- Your homeowner's insurance may require permitted HVAC work for claims related to that equipment
